Project Overview

Located on the northwest corner of Loop 1604 and IH-10 in northwest San Antonio, Sundt completed construction on the La Cantera Town Center Roads and Parks project. This provides the San Antonio community premier outdoor recreation spaces, additional access to La Cantera’s existing commercial and multifamily properties and will serve the future expansion of the newest mixed-use development in the La Cantera area.

Almost half of the project acreage is home to two new public parks straddling Leon Creek. The first includes a large parking lot, and wide multi-use concrete trail systems that meander through the native hill country forest and connect the new recreational elements and parkway to the existing Leon Creek Greenway trail system. The second park, Coyote Dog Park, is a 7.5-acre public dog park, one of the largest in the San Antonio area. The project preserved all the live oaks and native hardwood trees within the park; these provide a shade tree canopy throughout the park, embracing the community’s desire to preserve their native tree canopy.

The roads portion of the project included nearly 4,500 linear feet of parkway starting directly off the IH-10 southbound frontage and provides additional access routes from IH-10 and Old Fredericksburg Road into the Shops at La Cantera, Celeste Apartments and the Residences at La Cantera. Over 17,000 linear feet of associated water, sewer, gas, communication, electrical and stormwater utilities were rocksaw cut into the limestone along the road’s alignment to provide the infrastructure for this project.  This project presented specific excavation and trench hazards with almost 2 miles of rock sawed trench and utility install up to 22 feet in depth.  Before the excavation scope began, Sundt worked with the subcontractors and craft workforce to train every individual in hazard identification, protective systems and the knowledge base of the competent person in both fall-protection and excavation.

The key design criteria for the design team was to provide a place where the local community can “live-work-play.” By connecting existing multifamily residences, restaurants, shopping, IH-10 access, and new parks and recreation, this goal was accomplished.
