Project Overview

This design-build project added four selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for nitrogen oxide emission control for Units 4 and 5 of the APS Power Plant. The full project scope included installation of the four SCRs, four Howden tri-sector rotary air pre-heaters (APH), two dry sorbent injection systems, a urea-to-ammonia facility, and four ASME boiler and pressure vessel code economizer bypasses on the existing coal-fired units. The selective catalytic reactors (SCR) installed are the tallest in North America at 240 feet tall and the second-largest air pre-heaters in the world at 60 feet in diameter.

The APS Four Corners Generating Station is a coal-fired power plant located near Fruitland, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation that is leased from the Navajo Nation government. The plant is powered by low-sulfur coal from the nearby Navajo mine and cooled by nearby Morgan Lake. The upgraded equipment will enable the plant to meet more stringent environmental standards by reducing emissions by 80%. The Four Corners upgrades are expected to provide more than $6.3 billion in economic value to the region over the next 30 years, at least 70% of which will benefit the Navajo Nation and its citizens.

Sundt self-performed the majority of work at the Four Corners Project with a craft staffing of over 400 and over 2 million hours worked.

For this project Sundt completed:

  • 56,000 linear feet of piping
  • 8,000 tons of structural steel
  • 6,800 tons of duct
  • 130,000 linear feet of weld
  • 6,000 cubic yards of concrete
  • 10,000 linear feet of drilled caisson

“I have always enjoyed working with Sundt. They always work with a sense of urgency but do an excellent job of crafting the finished product.”
