HEAVY RAIL

IN-HOUSE EXPERTISE

Successful rail projects rely on expertise in every construction need, from foundations to utility relocations, drainage management and minimizing disruptions to freight operations.

In-house expertise and the ability to self-perform complex work is especially relevant for rail projects, which often require construction in remote locations. Sundt has built a resume in underpass and overpass projects, constructing in and around active railways all while maintaining service. This is achieved by Sundt’s commitment to planning, customized execution and commitment to safety and schedule management.

COLLABORATION & INNOVATION

Whether it be performing for or in adjacent to Class One clients, we’re committed to performing work safely, efficiently and without disruption.

Sundt works collaboratively with freight rail industry clients, understanding the industry’s goal of moving freight safely and efficiently while preserving assets and right-of-way for rail operations. Our experience with alternative delivery methods provides clients the opportunity to deliver much needed infrastructure in the most efficient way, focusing on quality and safety for the industry. We prioritize collaboration with highly qualified design partners and optimize railroad operations, compressing the work windows required to install features on an active railroad.

REHABILITATION & REVITALIZATION

In an effort to assist in the revitalization of the downtown area, the City of Tucson awarded Sundt a CMAR contract to rehabilitate the historic downtown 4th Avenue Underpass. The underpass involved the reconstruction of the historic 258-foot-long UPRR / 4th Avenue Underpass in downtown Tucson. Sundt constructed a shoofly to detour the Union Pacific Railroad during construction, integrated a custom shoring plan and completed extensive utility relocations for the project.

This reinforced concrete underpass replaced Arizona’s oldest urban grade-separated roadway-railroad crossing, built in 1916. The new underpass accommodates Sun Link, the Tucson Modern Streetcar, and also features widened ADA pedestrian walkways on both sides of the underpass, public art, and separate bicycle lanes.
